Honoring a Pioneer of Cultural Connections

The Ranald MacDonald State Historic Site, located near Curlew, WA, commemorates the life of Ranald MacDonald, an early cultural ambassador and educator. Born in 1824 at nearby Fort Colvile, MacDonald is celebrated as the first English teacher in Japan, where he fostered cross-cultural understanding during a time of isolation. The site features interpretive panels that tell his remarkable story, including his adventurous journey to Japan and his contributions to bridging cultures. At only 100 square feet, this is by far the smallest state park in Washington. Surrounded by scenic views of the Kettle River Valley, this site offers visitors a chance to reflect on MacDonald’s legacy while enjoying the peaceful landscape of Northeast Washington.
