Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge
Where Forests, Waters, and Wildlife Meet
The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge, located near Colville, WA, and about 70 miles north of Spokane, is a 40,000-acre expanse of diverse habitats at the edge of the Selkirk Mountains. As the only mountainous, mixed-conifer forest refuge in the entire National Wildlife Refuge System, it features six distinct forest types, including Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and western hemlock. The refuge offers rolling forests, scattered lakes, marshes, ponds, and over 80 miles of streams that flow through steep canyons and broad valleys. Home to moose, black bears, deer, and countless bird species, it is a haven for wildlife and a critical area for conservation. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and scenic drives, connecting with nature in this unique corner of the Columbia River Basin and Okanogan Highlands.
