Day 1: Waterfalls & Wonders

Morning:

  • Start the adventure with a short hike to Sweet Creek Falls, where kids can explore the lush forest and enjoy the cascading waterfall.

Afternoon:

  • Head to Crawford State Park and Gardner Cave, Washington’s third-longest limestone cavern, for a free guided tour featuring stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and otherworldly formations.
  • Stop at Forebay Campground for a swim and a relaxing break along the calm waters of the reservoir.
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch in the campground day-use area.
  • Head to Metaline or Metaline Falls and check into your cozy lodge, motel or vacation rental.

Evening:

  • Return to Metaline Falls for a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Optional: Take an evening stroll through the charming town and learn about its historic buildings.

Day 2: Canyon Views & Hidden Falls

Morning:

  • Enjoy breakfast, then drive to Boundary Dam Vista House where you’ll take in panoramic views of the rugged canyon carved by the Pend Oreille River.
  • Visit the nearby Peewee Falls Scenic Overlook, for a dramatic view of the stunning waterfall that plunges into the Pend Oreille River.

Afternoon:

  • Visit the Riverside Canyon Scenic Overlook, where the whole family can marvel at the sheer rock walls and dramatic scenery shaped by time and water.
  • Have lunch at a local café in Metaline Falls.
  • Enjoy a sweet treat at the ice cream shop!

Evening:

  • Check out the old train car-turned Visitor Center in the Metaline Falls Park.
  • Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Return to your lodging for a restful evening.

Day 3: History & Trails

Morning:

  • Fuel up with breakfast, then head to the Mill Pond Historic Site for a family-friendly hike through the remnants of an old log mill operation.
  • Learn about the area’s history and enjoy a peaceful walk that takes you across bridges and past historic sites.

Afternoon:

  • Enjoy a picnic lunch in the Mill Pond Historic Site Pavilion.
  • Take the scenic route home past beautiful Sullivan Lake for one more Northeast Washington experience before heading home.
